5 Fandom Friday: My favourite geeky stores

I am a full week behind with this post, so I hope you’ll forgive my lateness.  I just didn’t want to miss this prompt because it was such an awesome one.  I love shopping for nerdy clothing and homewares and I often have people ask me where I purchased certain items from.  I feel as though this post is a chance to give a huge shout-out to some of the greatest geeky stores on the web.

geek nest

Geek Nest

Geek nest makes the most awesome range of scented soy candles.  Each scent is inspired by geeky characters and places.  I bought myself a bundle of three Harry Potter candles and a TARDIS Blue candle from Geek Nest last year and I was hooked.  The scents are lovely but not too strong.  The candles burn really cleanly and are long-lasting.  Each one comes in a neat tin and they make ideal gifts.  The Expecto Patronum candle is my all-time favourite.  I light it when I’m settling down with a book, as the spicy smell adds a relaxing and cosy vibe to my lounge.  The floral loveliness of TARDIS Blue scented my bedroom until it burned out.

I adore my geeky tees, and Threadless has the best range I’ve seen.  Not only are their designs super clever, but they are reasonably priced and great quality.  I have so many tees from Threadless, including this Alice in Zombieland one.  Threadless support independent artists which is something that I think is vital.  If you’re looking for awesome nerdy tee shirts, Threadless is a great place to start.

Perks of Aurora

If, like me, you like something nerdy to drink your morning coffee from, then you’re going to dig Perks of Aurora.  This shop has a huge selection of hilarious fandom coffee mugs inspired by sources such as The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmitt, Clueless, Mean Girls, Parks and Recreation, The Office, SNL, Legally Blonde and Friends.  There are so many obscure jokes on mugs to choose from!  I got my Lil’ Sebastian and Dunder Mifflin mugs from Perks of Aurora and they are brilliant.

Nerdburger Jewellery

Nerdburger Jewellery is run by my friend Caz, and is full of hand-made quirky goods.  If you’re looking for hairbows made out of Tazos or tiny clay donut earrings, Nerdburger is the place to look.  Caz is so creative and her work has a truly zany, whacky quality.  She’s a comic book queen and a 90’s fiend and that defnitely comes across in her designs.

Rainbow Alternative

I first discovered Rainbow Alternative when I was searching for Empire Records tee shirts on Etsy.  I was instantly drawn to their street-art inspired, spray-painted designs and awesome pop culture references.  To date, I now own four of their Empire Records tees.  All of these shirts have been worn and washed over and over and are still in fabulous condition.  In addition to awesome tees, they have baby onesies, button badges, record art and loads more things.  Rainbow Alternative has a large range of feminist and queer-pride products too.

Where do you shop for your geeky wares?  My birthday is coming up, so I’m on the hunt for new stores to check out for gift ideas.

Things I love Thursday

Heeeere’s Thursday!  I’m feeling so ready to leap into this week’s installment of Things I Love Thursday, so let’s just get right down to it.

This week I love:

– The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmit.  I started watching this adorable program on Netflix and I’m addicted.  Kimmy is so wonderful and I wish I had a roommate like Tituss.  I’ve been humming the theme tune to myself ever since I started watching it.

– Surprise visits from my Mum and her dog.

– My new Doctor Frank N Furter tee shirt.  So fierce.

– Taking a sick day.  I feel so guilty whenever I take a day off work, even if I’m on death’s door.  But after one hour at my computer on Monday my head was throbbing and my sinuses were fit to explode.  So I decided to be a grown up and just take the day off.  I had a great rest and came back to the office on Tuesday with a clear head.

-Treating myself to pretty underthings.  I was in dire need of some new undies so I splashed out and bought some gorgeous handmade ones from Cherry Lingerie London.  I am so happy with them.  Not only are these knickers super cute, but they are gorgeous quality and so comfortable.

I chose a mixture of sexy and cute designs, and they are all outstanding. I will definitely be buying more from Cherry.

– Slippers at the end of a long day of work.

– Making time for blogging again.

– Home made spaghetti bolognaise.

– Getting a surprise parcel from my grandmother filled with vintage scarves.  There are some stunners among them and this Malta scarf is one of my favourites.  My ex-boyfriend’s grandmother was Maltese and she was one of the sweetest people I’ve ever met.  She passed away years ago and I confess that I still miss her sometimes.  So it’s nice to have this scarf to wear in her honour when I’m missing her.

– Lighting the heater.

– Walking to work in the morning air, which is pleasantly chilly but not yet frightfully cold.

– Bidding a fond farewell to one of my most special friends, who is heading off for a year in the UK.  I’m going to miss his goofy face, but I’m so proud of him for leaping into this great adventure.

What do you love this week?

Things I love Thursday 9/4/2015

Happy Thursday to you, ladies and Jellybeans! I hope that you’re ready to leap into a big ol’ list of love, because here we go!

This week I love:

– Dating and exploring the world of polyamory.  I’ve found two very special people who are really lighting my fire at the moment and it’s been brilliant in the most unexpected way.

– Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure.

– Hot cross buns and tiny chocolate eggs.

– My new Sick Sad World tee shirt.

– My job.  I’m enjoying it so much.  The work is challenging and I’m lucky enough to work with a fantastic group of people.  I couldn’t be happier.

– Long walks through the rose gardens on sunny mornings.  When the sun hits those roses, the fragrance is just heavenly.

– Art deco jewellery.

– Minties.

– Pulling out scarves and jackets for the first time this year.  It’s beginning to get chilly!

– Giggles with my brother.

– Bojack Horseman.  If you’re a fan of silly and borderline terrifying adult cartoons, then this one is for you.

– Contemplating Netflix.

– Beginning the two-month countdown to my birthday.

– Knitting.  So much knitting.

What about you?  What do you love this Thursday?

Daily outfit 7/4/2015

Fact: when I was a teen,  I was utterly obsessed with Daria.  Every afternoon I would stretch my acne-riddled body across the living room sofa to watch the antics of the outcast of Lonsdale High.  I was convinced that there could be no cooler person on the planet than Daria, and I held her up as my own personal role model.  I could relate to her frustration with the monotony of high school life, her fascination with the macabre and her ongoing rivalry with her more-popular sibling.  In my eyes, Daria was the Queen of the Misfits.

Now, fifteen years later, I’m still smitten with the abrasive Miss Morgandorfer and her quick-witted buddy, Jane Lane.  So when I found this tee shirt in Pulp Kitchen, I couldn’t resist snapping it up.

I am wearing:

– Sick Sad World tee from Pulp Kitchen

– Red mini skirt from Supre

– Black leggings from Holeproof

– Black motorcycle boots from Big W

– Key earrings from Etsy

– Fleur du lis ring from Equip

– Beetle ring (gift from my parents)

Although they are on the pricey side, Pulp Kitchen’s tees are worth the extra bucks.  Not only are they really soft and comfortable, but the prints stay vibrant for ages and they keep their shape really well.  Plus they have such a brilliant range of prints that range from geeky to nostalgic.

Were you a fan of Daria back in the day?

Things I love *ahem* Wednesday 24/12/2014

I know what you’re thinking.  “Vanessa, it isn’t Thursday yet, why are you doing a Things I Love post on a Wednesday?”

Well, the simple reason is that tomorrow is Thursday and it’s also Christmas Day.  So I thought I would give myself a break from blogging and do my Things I Love post on Wednesday just for this week.

So, let’s get started shall we?

This week I love:

– Not shaving my legs.  Don’t get me wrong, I like having smooth legs in summer.  But I’m also sick of razor burn and the itchiness when my leg hair grows out. So for now I’m experimenting with not shaving.  So far, so good.

– Eggnog.  It’s the perfect Christmassy drink.

– Sparkling apple juice and gin and tonic on a hot night.  Refreshing and delicious.

– Baking gingerbread.  This year I tried out some fancy new cookie cutters, and had very mixed results.  The cookies tasted amazing, but the shapes didn’t turned out the way I’d planned.

This was supposed to be a candy cane, but turned out looking more like Mr Hanky, the Christmas Poo from South Park.

Ironically, the shapes that turned out the best were these dinosaurs: the only non-Christmas shape I made.  Oh well, at least these looked cute.  And my friends had a blast trying to guess what shapes the cookies were supposed to be.

– Catching up with good friends before Christmas and sharing stories, a cup of tea and some delicious sausage rolls.

– The Muppets.  Today, tomorrow and always.

– Chunky rings.

-Having Jelly join in with my yoga practice.  I call this pose “Reclining Rainbow”

– Getting hugs and kisses from all the old ladies at church.

– Attending a funeral for the wife of one of my old work colleagues.  Although it’s never nice to attend a funeral, this one was so beautiful.  The church was full to the brim, so much so that I had to sit up on a balcony.  In all of my twenty eight years, I’ve never been onto any of the balconies in that church.  The family of the woman who had passed told such beautiful stories about her and it was a really uplifting and positive service.

– My new Slinky shirt.  I bought this as a Christmas present for myself from Pulp Kitchen and I just love it.  They make some of the best tee shirts ever.

– Watching my cats snuggle each other in a rare spirit of friendliness.

– Stringing up Christmas lights in my bedroom.  Originally it was just going to be for decoration during the Christmas season, but my room look so magical that I think I’m going to have to leave them up all the time.

– Surprise packages in the mail from awesome friends.

What do you love this week sweetheart?  I’d be chuffed to read all about the things that are bringing joy to your world this week.

Also, I must wish you all a Merry Christmas.  I hope that the end of the year is somewhat relaxing, and that you have a chance to celebrate in your own way.  Look after yourselves and have a lovely Christmas.

Daily outfit 29/4/2014

Brrrrr!  Ned Stark was right…Winter is coming.  Today I’ve busted out some of my woolly underthings and a cosy hat to keep out the chill.

I am wearing:

– Leopard spot beanie from Equip

– Grey merino wool spencer from Target

– Empire Records shirt from Pulp Kitchen

– Black Versace jeans (thrifted)

– Black motorcycle boots from Big W

– Navy beaded earrings (inherited from my great-grandmother)

– Chain bracelet (gift from my aunt)

– Silver cross necklace (gift from my parents)

– Yin Yang mood ring from Queen Victoria markets

I’ve really been feeling the 90’s vibe lately.  I once heard someone say that when it comes to vintage looks, if you wore the trend the first time it was in fashion, you shouldn’t wear it the next time it comes around.  I’m not really one for fashion rules, because I believe that you should wear what makes you happy.  But I figure that even though I lived through the 90’s, I never wore the grunge look during this time, so I’m not technically breaking this fashion rule.

These boots are a staple item in my winter wardrobe.  They’re comfortable enough to walk in all day, they can be pulled on over jeans and cosy socks and they keep the rain and slush away from my toes.  I love them.

This tee shirt led to a slightly awkward encounter today. I ran into a woman from my church and was chatting to her when she pointed directly at my boobs and asked “And who are these guys?”  For a moment I thought she was asking about my breasts, but then I realised that she actually wanted to know the relevance of the characters on my tee shirt.  I told her they were from one of my favourite films, and she just shook her head and said, “I’m so far out of the loop!  It seems like everyone’s got something interesting on their tee shirt nowadays!”  I suppose that’s true, so many of us wear out interests on our chests today.  I know I’ve got a drawer-full of slogan tees that support that theory.

Daily outfit 25/3/2014

Today I decided to wear a fun, simple outfit that would put a bit of a spring into my step.  I just love pairing quirky separates to make a happiness-inducing outfit.

I am wearing:

– Archie “Blondes have more fun” tee shirt from Target

– Red mini skirt from Supre

– Red and white gingham heels from Shoo Biz

– Sunglasses earrings from Diva

– White plastic bangle (thrifted)

– Red beaded bracelet from the markets

It was a very sunny day today, and I got a bit of lens flare while I was taking these photos.  Oh well, these things happen.

I’m also fully aware that this might be the last time that I go bare-legged for a while.  The temperature is starting to drop as we head further into Autumn, so I think I’ll be raiding my tights drawer before too long!

I whipped my hair up into a bouncy pony tail for a simple but fun look.  I just love how much bounce my hair has now that it’s been cut!

I certainly had a blast wearing this outfit.  Cute slogan tees, plastic jewellery and bright colours are my recipe for a cute ensemble.

What do you wear when you want to inject a bit of fun into your outfits?
