What I wore: Benalla Shorts film festival.

I feel very blessed to be from Benalla.  Even though it’s such a small town, we have a lot going for us.  There’s the yearly Wall to Wall street art festival, a huge number of amazing cafes and restaurants, gorgeous picnic spots and the mural.  A relatively new event that’s sprung up is the Benalla Shorts film festival, which showcases short films made by local and national film makers. This year I scored tickets to the event and frocked up to attend.

I was very unsure about what to wear.  I wanted to be dressed up, but not over the top.  It was also absolutely stinking hot the day of the festival so I needed something that would be cool and comfortable.  So I opted for billowy, printed trousers and monochrome accessories.

I am wearing:

  • Black and white silk trousers (thrifted)
  • Black tank top from Uniqlo
  • Black patent heels from Nine West
  • Leopard print fascinator from Dangerfield
  • Art deco locket (thrifted)
  • Cubic zirconia earrings (belonged to my Nana)

This turned out to be the perfect outfit to wear to the film festival. I was so comfortable and I felt confident in my monochrome ensemble.  The fascinator was a fun touch, and added the perfect amount of whimsy to the whole outfit.  I feel like without it, I’d have looked a bit more casual and that’s not the vibe I was going for.

The festival itself was so much fun.  The winning film was called iRony, an animated take on how technology and social media is affecting our life in a negative way.  The most impressive thing about that film is that it was hand-animated, written, narrated and produced by one person….and he’s eighteen.  I was blown away by the sophistication of the film from such a young filmmaker.  I also voted for a film called Munchies, which was an adorable claymation feature about a farmer with a snail problem.

I feel that my black and white outfit was perfect for a cultured afternoon of short films.  I hit the mark and didn’t feel overdone or too casual, and I was truly confident in the way I looked.

What I wore: They’re the world’s most fearsome, fighting teens.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja turtles were possibly my very first fandom.  I got into watching the cartoons when I was around four years old, and quickly became obsessed.  The live action TMNT movie was the first film I ever saw at the cinema, and to this day is one of my favourite films.  And the ninja turtles feature quite prominently in my wardrobe.  So this weekend when I was having a chilled day at home, I chose an awesome retro-print baseball tee featuring my favourite heroes in a half shell.

I am wearing:

  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles tee from Jay Jays
  • Black and white rag skirt from Temt
  • Black zipper leggings from Rubi
  • Black and white sneaker booties from Valley Girl
  • Studded cuff
  • Silver ring from Sportsgirl
  • Lego ring from Nerdburger
  • Doughnut earrings from Off Ya Tree

Can we take a moment to talk about these earrings?  I bought them at the beginning of the year right before my first meeting with my boyfriend, David.  I was panicked that the earrings I was wearing weren’t cool enough for meeting this dude, and I made a mad dash into Off Ya Tree in Swanston Street and found this amazing pair of doughnut earrings waiting for me.  As David and I had bonded over our mutual love of The Simpsons, it seemed appropriate that I should wear Homer’s favourite food for our first meeting.  These have quickly become one of my most worn pairs of earrings.

Do you have a favourite Turtle?  Mine is Donatello by a nose, with Michaelangelo following very closely behind.

Daily outfit 8/10/2014

It’s been such a long time since I’ve done an outfit post.  With all my Liptember selfies, I just ran out of time to take proper outfit shots.  But now we’re into October and I’ve got more opportunities to record my outfits.

I’m really feeling the Halloween vibe at the moment.  I wore this witchy outfit to go out for dinner with my family.

I am wearing:

– Black sequinned dress from Living Doll

– Black and white striped jacket from Cotton On

– Black fishnet tights from Leona Edminson

– Ruby slippers from Betts

– Studded belt (gift from my ex-boyfriend)

– Green vintage cocktail ring (Faye Bella on Etsy)

This look actually began with my makeup.  Miss Fairchild sent me a huge care package filled with the spoils from her latest beauty clear-out.  There was a beautiful emerald green eyeshadow in the package that I was instantly smitten with.  It is one of the Bourjois intense eye pots in 05 and I just adore the colour.  Sadly, the pretty green didn’t show up on camera.  The rich green shade instantly put me in mind of the Wicked Witch of the West and the rest of the outfit started falling into place.

I created a smokey eye using the green and some soft grey shades.  In keeping with the witchy theme, I used my Urban Decay lipstick in Theodora from the Oz: the Great and Powerful collection.

Then I added black on black, playing with texture.  I threw on this stripey jacked for a bit of lightness.  And of course, I couldn’t resist wearing my ruby slippers to complete the look.

I’m looking forward to adding some more Halloween-inspired outfits to the blog this month.  I’ve definitely started embracing my dark side now that Halloween is on it’s way.

Daily outfit 26/8/2013

Today’s outfit post is a slightly sad one for me.  This is probably going to be the last outfit post that I do in front of this mossy wall in the house that Ross and I shared.  This afternoon I’m going to pick up the keys for my new flat, and by this time next week I’ll hopefully be living there.  I’ll have to find a whole new place to take outfit photos.

So here it is: my final outfit post in this house.

DSCF8778I am wearing:

– Red sequinned beret from Sportsgirl

– Red Pucca top (thrifted)

– Black and white striped rag skirt from Temt

– Black cut-out leggings from Rubi

– Red ballet flats from Steve Madden

– Lego ring from Nerd Burger jewellery

– Flower ring from Surfers Paradise.

It’s been a miserable couple of days, made more dreary by the task of packing up all my things.  I hate moving, and I particularly dislike moving away from this place.  The day I moved in I was so excited, so filled with hope and promise.  It feels so hollow to be leaving with things in such a shambles.  That’s why I’ve put on so many bright colours, to try to inject a bit of cheer into my mood.

DSCF8779This shirt is one of my favourite thrift finds.  It’s the perfect mix of cute and kitsch and it suits my style so well.  The little figure on the front is padded so she stands out from the rest of the shirt, which is a fun touch.  It cost me a grand total of $3.

So next time I write an outfit post it will be from my new place.  I’m going to be without internet for a few days after I move, so don’t panic if my posts are a bit slow or sporadic, or if I don’t reply to your comments or emails.  I haven’t dropped off the face of the earth, I’m just in an internet-free zone.

Wish me luck!

Things I Love Thursday 12/7/2012

Welcome to another edition of Things I Love Thursday, where I share all the things that have been making me grin over the past week.

Before we get started on the gratitude, here’s a picture of what I’m wearing today:

I am wearing:

– Black woollen jumper from Target

– Black and white plastic hair bobbles (bought at a junk store a million years ago)

– Black and white rag skirt from Temt

– Black herringbone tights from Razzamatazz

– Pink leopard print belt from Extentrix

– Black and white comic book heels from Betts

– Silver pocket watch from Rose and Mr Brown

– Silver rings

This week, I love:

– Going to the movies with my dad.  We went to see Men in Black 3, and it was pretty darn good.  Moving back to my hometown has given me the opportunity to spend a lot more time with my parents, which I’m so grateful for.

– Ross, because he always stands up for the things that he believes in.

– Having morning tea with my mum and my nana.

– My new bag charm

This gorgeous little critter was a gift from Violet LeBeaux.  It features her wee bunny mascot, Bergamont.  If you like the charm, and you’d like one for yourself, you can snap them up in Violet’s new etsy store.  She’s got all kinds of bits and bobs featuring Bergamont for you to spend your pennies on.

– The fact that my e-book, Living Frugally Without Sacrificing Your Style, is selling like hotcakes.  Big kisses to all the lovely readers who’ve snapped up a copy.  Your support means the world to me.  If you’d like a copy of your own, click here!

-My new Lipstick Queen lippie.  Who knew that I’d come to love coral so much?

– Home-made soup cooked in the slow-cooker.  Heaven on a cold night.

– nude nail polish.  I’ve taken a break from bright colours this week, and my nails are painted a delicate buff shade.  It’s been a rather nice change (plus light colours hide chips so much better than the brights I usually wear).

-Cupping massages.  I had my second one on Friday, and my back feels wonderful.  I’ve now gone a month without a tension headache, which is a new record for me.  I can’t tell you how relieved I feel.

What are you loving this week, sweetie-pea?  Don’t hesitate, leave a comment with all the things you feel grateful for this week!

Things I Love Thursday 28/6/2012

Well, that week certainly raced around in a hurry!  I can scarcely believe that it’s already Thursday.  Luckily, it’s been a really great week, so I’m not going to have any trouble thinking of awesome things to share with you this week.

Here is my outfit today:

I am wearing:

– Purple hand-knitted scarf

– Pink and black argyle jumper from Fashion Fair

– Silver ear cuff from Sportsgirl

– Key earring from etsy

– Liquorice allsorts ring

-Pink tank top from Bonds

– Amethyst ring

– Purple lace tiered skirt (gift from Kathryn of Project Kathryn)

– Black stockings from Target

– Black and white striped socks from a market

– Sneaker booties from Valley Girl

– Robot badge from Typo

It occurs to me that I’ve owned this skirt for over a year, I wear it all the time, and yet I don’t think that I’ve ever blogged it. What a shame!  It’s seen me through my birthday, the Supanova convention, the Dresden Dolls concert and countless other less exciting occasions.  I love the colour and the fact that it’s a perfect mix of punky and cute.

This week, I love:

– My changing work schedule.  I convinced my boss to cut down my hours and move me to a different department.  So now, I’ve got three extra hours at home and my work hours are more spread out.  I don’t have any more long work days or insanely early starts. This has been a huge relief.

– The little Disney dolls that Ross bought for me this week.  Here are a few of my favorite ones:

Donald Duck

Buzz Lightyear

The Cheshire Cat

I have a huge collection of these now.  I’m not exactly sure where I’m going to put them though.  I think I’ll group them into trios and dot them about the house.

 – Hobnobs

I found these at Aldi earlier in the week.  I have a British friend who absolutely adores these, and swears that they are the king of all biscuits.  I am yet to actually eat one.  However, I do like foods with vaguely dirty-sounding names, so these instantly appealed to me.

-Sunday driving

Ross and I went for a drive to Myrtleford on Sunday.  The weather was pretty grim, but we had a lovely drive.  We had lunch at Cafe Fez (because fez’s are cool).  They had the most amazing menu, filled with Moroccan and middle-eastern cuisine.  I tried falafel for the first time (and loved it) and Ross had a tagine.  We then popped in to Red Ramia, an undercover bazaar.  I saw some lovely things, but I didn’t buy anything in the end.  Ross got a couple of Japanese comic books for a buck each.

– Walt Disney.

– Coming home from work on Friday, to be greeted by a ringing telephone and one of my best mates at the other end.  It was a gorgeous surprise.

What do you love this week?  Don’t be shy, leave a comment and share your love!

Things I Love Thursday 24/5/2012

Happy Thursday everybody!  This week has been crazy-busy and filled with awesome things.  As always though, before we get down to the serious business of gratitude, I’ll share an outfit with you:

I wore this outfit earlier in the week to go on a road trip with my mother.  We drove up to Mansfield, which is about forty minutes away from home. It was a lovely drive, and we had a delicious lunch at The Produce Store.  We did some shopping and had a good chat.  It was wonderful to have the opportunity to spend some quality time with my Mum.

I am wearing:

– Purple knit beret (thrifted)

– Purple and black striped shirt from Cotton On

– Grey undershirt from Target

– Denim vest from Cotton On

– Blue swirl earrings (handmade by my aunt)

– Butterfly brooch (thrifted)

– Purple floral gypsy skirt from Glassons

– Brown boots (gift from a friend)

– Assorted rings.

This week, I love:

– Figuring out what to do with my diplomas.  I will be getting them framed soon, but I still haven’t decided where they should hang once they’re done.  I’ll probably put them in my office.  For now though, I’ve been using them to re-enact the scene from The Wizard of Oz where the Scarecrow gets his brain.

– Coming up with an awesome idea for a birthday present for my Dad.

– Planning my own birthday, which really isn’t too long away at all (scary).

– Taking extreme close-ups of my cats. Ringo particularly loves having his photo taken.

– Watching The Muppets with Ross.  I’ve been waiting anxiously for this gem of a movie to come out on DVD, and this week, my wait was over.  I’ve already watched it twice (which means that I’ve seen it four times this year).  There might be something wrong with me.

– Encouraging my mother to try Indian food for the first time.  It was a huge success.

-Potato and leek soup with a dollop of sour cream and a crusty baguette.

-Opera cake.  Mum and I shared this for dessert when we went to Mansfield.  It was so rich that, between us, we couldn’t finish it.  It was jolly nice though.

– The discovery that The Mighty Boosh is not the best thing to watch while doing my yoga workout.  I frequently laugh so hard that I lose my balance.

-Sunshine on my skin.

– Catching up with Sam for hugs.

What are you loving this Thursday?  I’d love to hear about all the things that are making you grin and giggle this week, so hop to it and leave a comment.
