Disney Villains makeup series: Yzma from The Emperor’s New Groove.

I can’t believe that this is the final Disney Villains makeup tutorial for 2013.  Where did this year go?  It feels like just yesterday that I was trying to create the perfect graphic eyeliner for my Jafar look, and now it’s December.

This month, I’m taking my inspiration from Yzma from The Emperor’s New Groove.  Yzma isn’t one of the most well-known villains, but she is one of my favourites.  I like her because she reminds me of an old woman who was very glamorous and gorgeous when she was young, and has always kept her passion for fashion.  There are just some women who never succumb to the tracksuits-and-jeans look and keep wearing elaborate costume jewellery, turbans and wild eyeshadow until the day they die.  And Yzma is one of them.  She’s also wildly theatrical and over-uses the word “brilliant” which I find endearing.

Yzma’s appearance is similar in many ways to Cruella De Vil.  She has a similar angular frame and sharp features.

For this look, I used a palette of different shades of purple and a splash of blue.  In the film, shades of purple are reserved for Yzma, as it is said to represent madness.  She is almost always shown wearing shades of blue, black and purple.

See you next year!  As always, if you’d like to request a villain for me to interpret, please feel free to let me know.

Another day, another pin-curl set.  This time I set my hair in the same pattern as my Marilyn set, but I didn’t brush the curls out when they were dry.  Instead, I combed them with a wide-toothed comb to separate the curls and gave them a bit of a fluff with my fingers.  I’ve got this fab set of 70’s-style fluffy curls which have loads of bounce.

I decided to pair my fuzzy hair with a hippie-luxe outfit.

DSCF8712I am wearing:

-Purple velvet blouse (thrifted)

– Purple chevron skirt from Target

– Denim waistcoat from Cotton On

– Black lace-up boots (thrifted)

– Bicycle man brooches (gift from my friend Tom)

– Gold rock ring from ASOS

– Silver squiggle ring from Kliens

– Silver square ring from Diva

DSCF8713I bought this velvet top way back in March, and I’m pretty sure that it’s never made it onto the blog.  I have worn it a bunch of times, but never on a day when I’ve remembered to take outfit photos.  Oh well.  I love the colour and the texture is so luxe.

DSCF8711My brooches are another gift from my friend Tom, the intrepid explorer.  He bought them for me in Berlin during his travels.  They are made from used bottle caps, with a design painted on enamel set into the cap and turned into a brooch.  Tom bought me a pair because he thought I could wear them as collar buttons or cufflinks.  I adore them.

DSCF8719I kept my makeup pretty simple today.  Just a bit of BB cream, some blush and a touch of lippie.  I made my eyes the main focus, with a wash of sepia-brown shadow over the lids.  It’s one of my favourite eyeshadow colours because it makes my eyes look crazy blue, but it still looks quite natural and subtle.

I’m having such fun experimenting with all these different curls.  Let me know if you’d like tutorials on any of the looks I’ve done, because I’d be happy to oblige.

I hope you have an awesome day!

Daily outfit 29/7/2013

Today’s outfit is a little boho ensemble I threw on to chill out at home and then go shopping with my mum.

DSCF8642I am wearing:

– Printed maxi dress from Jay Jays

– Purple Peace Angel velvet jacket from Friperie

– Tan boots from Target

– Silver beaded necklace (gift from my friend Tom)

– Beaded flower ring (gift from my parents)

– Paisley bangle (thrifted)

-Diamente ring from ASOS

– Butterfly ring (gift from my aunt)

DSCF8643I’d been having a bit of fun with my hair on the day I took these pictures.  One thing I miss about my long hair is how I could effortlessly tousle it into a funky hippie style.  My shorter hair tends to sit so smoothly and doesn’t like being messed up.  I had a go at using a little bit of texturizing spray on it and it worked a treat. It beefed up the strands and made my do look all choppy and wavy.  I added a couple of little plaits to the top of my hair as well.

DSCF8650I was sporting a two-toned manicure, because I couldn’t decide which polish I wanted to use.  I decided to wear both.

DSCF8646The necklace I’m wearing was a very special gift from my friend Tom.  Tom’s been living overseas for the last year and a half.  After tripping all around Europe and America, he spent six months at an orphanage in Mongolia.  He worked as a caretaker and teacher during his time there.  Last Saturday, I caught up with Tom for breakfast and tales of his adventures.  He bought me back a tonne of beautiful gifts, but none more lovely than this beaded necklace.  He told me that the children were busily making these necklaces, and he thought that I might like one.  All of the kids were so excited and begged Tom to choose them to make a necklace for me.  Tom picked one special little girl, and she made this necklace especially for me.  I am so pleased and very proud to be wearing something that was crafted so lovingly.

Howdy!  Today I’m experimenting with some indoor outfit photos.  I normally take my pictures outside, because the light in our house isn’t the best.  My indoor photos always turn out a bit too grainy for my liking.  But now that it’s getting cold, I need to find somewhere in the house that I can take pictures.  I can’t stand shivering away outside while I try to look gorgeous for outfit pictures.

On the weekend, I opened up our blinds in the lounge room, and it’s bought in a lot more natural light.  So today’s outfit pictures are brought to you from my living room.  Enjoy!

DSCF8193I love how slanty this photo is.  I originally thought that I’d take the photos in front of the book case, but I have to put the camera on a weird angle to be able to get my shoes into the shot.  This makes me feel a little seasick every time I look at this picture.

DSCF8195This spot is not as well lit, but I can get my whole body into frame.  I might have to try taking some pictures later in the day so that there’s more light in the room.  It’s a learning curve…

DSCF8196I am wearing:

– Black long-sleeved shirt from Cotton On

– Purple and green crocheted jumper (thrifted)

– Purple sarong (thrifted)

– Black motorcycle boots from Big W

– White beaded earrings (gift from my grandparents)

– Brown resin ring from The Violet Town Op Shop

– Silver ring (thrifted)

– Gold tone ring (found in the street)

– Amethyst ring (gift from Ross)

– Beetle ring (gift from my parents)

– Green bangle thrifted from The Violet Town Op Shop.

DSCF8200I don’t think I’ve blogged about this jumper before, even though I’ve had it for a while.  I saw it in Target at the end of last year, and while I liked it, I decided that I didn’t want to pay $30 for it.  A few weeks later, I came across the same jumper in my local Salvation Army store for $3.  I’m very happy with it.  I love the colours and the crochet weave.  The cropped sleeves made it ideal for wearing in the in-between weather before it started to get really chilly.  Now that winter is coming (just ask Ned Stark) I need to layer another top underneath. But I like the way it looks, so everyone wins.

DSCF8197The other thing I love about indoor outfit photos?  The fact that I can just crop out the piles of junk that are all over our living room and pretend that I’m a much better housekeeper than I am.

DSCF8202A little close-up to show off the colours in this jumper.

DSCF8203I have so much love for these boots.  So comfy and so warm.  If you don’t own a pair, I recommend you grab some.  They’re going to be a winter staple for me.

DSCF8204Loads of rings and chipped polish, as per usual.

Did you enjoy taking a peek at my living room?

Daily outfit 29/4/2013

I’m experimenting with a bit of print-clashing today.  I bought this skirt and this shrug months ago, and I feel as though I just haven’t worn them often enough.  In fact, I don’t think I’ve ever blogged about the bolero at all.  I’m trying to work it into a couple of outfits before it gets too cold to wear it at all.

I am wearing:

– Black bodysuit from Supre

– Purple chevron skirt from Target

– Purple and pink floral shrug from Target

– Black Dr Martens boots

– Silver pocket watch from Rose and Mr Brown

– Brown resin ring (thrifted from the Violet Town op shop)

– Turquoise ring (gift from my mother)

– Amethyst ring

– Gold hoop earrings

This outfit feels very ‘me’.  I feel most comfortable in long skirts and tight tops.  When I was about thirteen, this type of outfit was almost my uniform.  Then I fell in love with blue jeans and those took over my wardrobe somewhat.

I wasn’t sure if these two prints would work together.  It was a bit of an experiment when I got dressed this morning.  But I really like the way it looks.  The purple flowers compliment the purple tones in the skirt, which I think pulls the outfit together.  When I’m clashing prints and colours in this way, I try to anchor the look by wearing lots of black.  It adds a bit of a barrier between the pieces, so they don’t look quite as garish.

It was really overcast when I took these photos, so I had to use the flash on a couple of them. I hate doing that, because sometimes the flash can distort colours and textures.  But these pictures didn’t look too bad, so I was happy.

Do you ever clash prints?  What’s your secret to pulling the look off right?

Daily outfit 9/4/2013

What the what?  It’s April already?  Seriously 2013, I don’t know if you’ve got some kind of bet going with 2014, where you try to race to December before she’s even got her shit together, but you need to just slow the eff down.  Seriously.

Phew!  Now that I’ve gotten that out of my system, here’s a look at my outfit for today:

I am wearing:

– Black turban (vintage)

– Black bamboo thermal shirt from Target

– Black beaded dress from Living Doll

– Pucci print cape from The Mill Markets

– Berry tights from Cotton On

– Black and gold platform shoes from Novo

– Beetle ring (gift from my parents).

I bought myself a couple of bamboo thermal tops from Target the other day on the recommendation of a friend.  I decided to layer one over my dress today for a bit of extra warmth.  Holy Star Wars are they fantastic!  They’re warm as toast, lightweight and super soft.  Plus, they sit really snugly against the skin, so they’re perfect for layering.  I only bought two- a black one and a white one, but I’m seriously considering getting more.

I’m all about layering at the moment.  It’s not really super-cold here yet, but the chill is getting chillier with every passing day.  Hats, tights and capes are all coming to my rescue to keep me warm and cosy, while still allowing me to look stylish.

Daily outfit 15/1/2013

I’m having a lot of fun with my summer wardrobe.  All through winter, I looked forward to being able to plan an outfit that didn’t consist of a million layers and thermal underwear.  I’ve been enjoying short sleeves, wispy fabrics and a distinct lack of unsexy undies.

DSCF7387 I am wearing:
– Purple pucci print pleated top (gift from my aunt)

– Pinstripe pants (thrifted)

– Platform shoes from Zu

– Amber earrings from my Nana

– Gold bracelet from my parents

– Gold heart ring from my parents.

– Wizard of Oz watch from Ross’s mum and dad.

DSCF7388I never realised until I typed my outfit description, but all of my jewellery in this post was gifted.  I also realised that I never buy gold jewellery.  It’s not that I don’t like gold, but I think that silver suits me better, so that’s what I choose for myself. It is nice to wear gold for a change though.

I liked the way that the pleats on my top mirror the stripes on my pants.  I think that kind of helps to tie the look together, and make the two clashing prints work together better.

I adore the cutout detail of these platforms.  It’s so unique and fun.

DSCF7394I kept my makeup fairly neutral, sticking to browns and coral lipstick.

DSCF7396Up-dos are a must for hot weather.  And it has been bloody scorching here!  It’s gotten up to 45 degrees on some days.  Thank God I have aircon.

DSCF7395Showing off my earrings.

Is there something that you don’t really buy for yourself, but which people tend to always choose as gifts for you?  I mentioned my gold jewellery, but I also have a massive collection of handbags, of which I only purchased two myself.  Do you have anything like that?
