What I wore: Breaking the rules

My 30×30 challenge isn’t over yet.  However, I’ve been home sick for a couple of days and I felt like I needed a pick me up. And breaking out of my capsule wardrobe felt like the ideal way to do that.  I needed a jolt of colour, something fun to make me feel like myself again after days in bed.

Last weekend a friend dropped around a bag of clothes for me.  She’d been cleaning out her wardrobe and brought over her cast-offs for me to look through.  One of the items in the bag was a gorgeous teal body-con dress. I instantly fell in love with the colour and the draped shoulder detail, but I was nervous about actually wearing this dress.  I tend to shy away from body -con styles because I find them incredibly intimidating.  I don’t like clothes that cling and show off all my curves and swerves.  I always feel a bit…exposed in body-con cuts. But as the temperature continued to climb this week, that teal wonder was whispering to me, tempting me to give it a whirl.

The final push I needed came in the form of Dia&Co’s Try-Day Friday challenge.  Every week on Instagram and Facebook, Dia&Co put out the call for followers to wear something that scares them, to try wearing something that they feel a teensy bit intimidated by.  I’m a huge believer in trying new things and taking leaps when you feel a bit stagnant.  And after a few days of feeling unwell and the tail-end of my 30×30 challenge, the Try Day Friday message was a wakeup call to me.  I threw on the pretty teal dress and rocked it.

I am wearing:

  • Teal body con dress from 7 Angels
  • Vintage tan sandals
  • Silver hoop earrings

I’m so glad that I took the Try Day Friday challenge and gave this dress a chance.  While it definitely pushed me out of my comfort zone, I felt summery and cool in my slinky little dress.  The bright colour was ideal for the hot weather and I felt proud of myself for trying it out.  It’s been a long time since I’ve worn something this far out of my comfort zone, and it kind of helped me to feel like myself again after what I’ve felt has been kind of a low-key month in the style department.

Daily outfit 27/1/2015

I’m struggling a tiny bit with my work wardrobe.  On the one hand, I have a collection of great work clothes that are appropriate for the office.  On the other hand, I have a lot of other wardrobe items that I’m keen to wear.  On a third hand (really Vanessa, a third hand?  Are you a mutant?)  the dress code in my office is fairly relaxed, and as long as we look clean and tidy we are pretty well free to wear what we want.  So I’ve been flitting between conservative business wear and some more casual ensembles, like this one.

I am wearing:

– White Sportsgirl peasant tunic (thrifted)

– Black velvet leggings from Cotton On

– Brown boots (gifted from a friend)

– Peacock scarf (Christmas pressie from friends Matt and Jude)

– Gold hoop earrings

– Floral celluloid ring (inherited from my Great Aunt Anne)

On this particular day we’d had a nice reprieve from the sweltering Summer heat, and a thunderstorm was forecast so I opted for boots.  The cooler air gave me an excuse to break out this gorgeous scarf that I got for Christmas from my friends Matt and Jude.  Matt picked this scarf out for me and he did a top job.  The colours go very nicely with a lot of my favourite outfits and I have a deep-seated love for peacocks.  This piece is just so gorgeous.

I’ve been having fun experimenting with my work wardrobe.  I’ve worn a mixture of vintage pieces and modern business wear and so far I haven’t felt the tiniest bit out of place.  In fact, I had the lovely lady who works at the post office tell me that she looks forward to my mail runs so that she can see what I’m wearing.  She told me that I have a “distinct sense of style” which buoyed me up.  Lovely compliments like that are so heartwarming, so I’m trying to make a bigger effort to tell people when they are doing something fantastic or looking awesome.

What have you been wearing to work lately?  Have you received any fabulous compliments?

Daily outfit 28/1/2012: The Hobbit.

On the weekend, Ross bought tickets for the two of us to see The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey at the Gold Class cinema.  I had expressed some hesitation at the idea of watching a three-hour film at the movies.  Ross thought that a more luxurious setting would make it easier for me to sit still for such a prolonged period, and he was dead right.

We were treated like celebrities.  Upon arrival, we were shown to a swanky lounge and given a menu.  A waitress took our order and asked when we would like each course brought to us.  We chose popcorn and soft drink for the beginning of the film, a roast pumpkin and pine nut pizza for the middle of the film and lemon tart for the final 1/2 hour.  We were seated in gigantic plush armchairs that reclined at the touch of a button.  There was even a private bathroom, complete with fresh flowers.

I had a really wonderful afternoon.  The movie was pretty good too.  I know that a lot of people have raved about it, but I wasn’t so impressed.  I thought it was good, but not great.  It was just so flipping long.  I loved the first two hours, but after that I got a bit bored.  There were several moments where I felt as though the story was wrapping up, only to have the action rev up again.  It wasn’t as bad as Return of the King for false endings (is it just me,  or did that film end about sixteen times?) but it got a bit tedious in the final hour.  I don’t know how I’m going to stay entertained for another two films.

Don’t think for a second that I didn’t enjoy myself though.  The visual effects were incredible, the story was brilliant and the costumes were brilliant.  It was a good movie, I just wasn’t as blown away as many people have been.

Anyway, this is the outfit that I chose to wear for our special day out:

DSCF7454I am wearing:

– Cream polka dot blouse from Target

– Floral embroidered jeans from Jeans West

– Brown studded Zu platform shoes (thrifted)

– Vintage silk scarf (thrifted)

– Rabbit brooch (gift from Ross’s parents)

– Silver charm bracelet (gift from my aunt)

– Water bracelet (gift from Ross’s grandmother)

– Brown resin ring (thrifted)

– Silver ring

DSCF7455It occurred to me that every time I wear this blouse, I always style it the same way: with a cute skirt, feminine heels and prim jewellery.  I decided to take it in a different direction by pairing it with some slouchy jeans and letting my black bra play peek-a-boo.

I used the sash from the blouse to keep my jeans up.

DSCF7457My makeup was slightly unusual for me because I went for a very trend-based look.  Sepia eyeshadow is going to be the next big thing.  Plus it makes blue eyes pop!

I wrapped the scarf around my bun to add a bit of colour and whimsy to my hair.

Have you seen The Hobbit?  What did you think?

Daily outfit 11/11/2010

In keeping with the theme from yesterday, I decided to build another outfit around an item of clothing that I love, but tend not to wear because I don’t know how to work it into an everyday context.

This dress belonged to my mother.  I absolutely adore it, but it’s so blatantly 70’s that I tend to save it for special nights out.  I have never worn it during the daytime (except once when Ross and I went out for Valentines lunch).

To tone down the volume of the skirts, I used a little vest to pull them in.  I also added some chunky jewellery to give the look a little weight.  The bracelet that I’m wearing is very special to me because it belonged to my aunt.  She gave it to me years ago, and explained to me that although it was a piece that she absolutely loved, she was passing it on to me because she knew I would wear it.  And I have, often.

I am wearing:

– white maxi dress with floral embroidery

– Denim waistcoat from Cotton On

– Brown Zu platform shoes

– cream chiffon scarf (thrifted)

– Bell bracelet

– Amethyst ring.

– Bird brooch from Wayward creations.

I recieved a very exciting package in the mail today.  I ordered a new wig a few days ago and it was delivered this afternoon.  I was especially tickled by the packaging:

The wig is the final piece of my costume for my end-of-exams party.  I am really excited for the party, because it will be a chance to catch up with my mates, let my hair down and have a great time.  Also, I have been wanting to dress up as this character for years, but I have never had a really good excuse.

Can you guess who I’m dressing up as?

Daily outfit: Marty Marachino

Continuing with my Pink Ladies theme, I decided to wear my Marty outfit today.  Although Marty isn’t my favorite Pink Lady, I think I like her style the best.  She dresses well beyond her years and always wears figure-hugging garments with lush hair and makeup.  This was a really fun, sexy look to try out.

I am wearing:

– Pink Sweater (thrifted)

– Black leather corset belt

– Grey pencil skirt from Syndicate

– Amethyst ring

– Pink silk scarf (thrifted)

– Black patent leather heels from Nine West

– Butterfly hair comb from Kookai

– Nude fishnet stockings.

I adore this outfit.

Frenchy: Sandy, would you like me to pierce your ears for you?

Marty: Here Frenchy, you can use my virgin pin.

Jan: Well, at least we know it’s good for something!

Frenchy: Hey Marty, are those new glasses?

Marty: Yeah, I got them for school.  Don’t you think they make me look smarter?

Rizzo: Nah, you can still see your face!

Daily outfit 28/2/2010

I hope that everyone has had a very brilliant weekend.  I am typing this before I slip into bed to watch Kung Fu Panda.  I have given myself a manicure and a facial and my hair is pinned up in pin curls because…tomorrow I go back to school.  I am less than thrilled to go back to classes and assignments, but at the same time, I have loads of interesting subjects this year that I am looking forward to diving into.

On Friday, Ross and I took the day off and slobbed on the couch.  We spent copious amounts of time napping, eating chips and watching South Park and Blades of Glory.

I am wearing:

– red and white polka dot blouse from Free Fusion

– Dark blue Garfunkle jeans

– Black corset belt

– Brown and gold vintage heels (thrifted)

– Brown and cream houndstooth swing coat (thrifted)

– Red Chanel handbag

– Navy and white nautical scarf

– Cherry brooch from Aldo

– Amethyst ring.

I had a great day today hanging out with Ross, going shopping and playing with the cat.  I’m so not ready to go back to school!

P.S: I want to say “Happy Anniversary” to Ross.  I love you.
