What I wore: Come up to the lab, and see what’s on the slab

When Erstwilder announced that they were releasing a Rocky Horror-themed collection I was beyond excited.  The Rocky Horror Picture Show is one of my all time favourite films, and I adore the aesthetic of the movie.  I had no doubt that Erstwilder would do an amazing job of translating that vibe into a line of jewellery.

Overall I wasn’t super impressed with the Rocky Horror collection.  Unlike the Grease collection that came out last year, I thought that this collection lacked range.  There were a lot of “portrait” style brooches and fewer conceptual pieces that evoked the general feel of the film.  I felt like this collection was a lot more literal, with more actual representations of characters rather than subtle winks to the theme. There were a couple of pieces that I just flat out didn’t like (such as the Riff Raff brooch) and some that were kind of cute, but that I wouldn’t personally wear (such as the Damn It Janet nameplate necklace).  I ended up getting two brooches from the collection: the Dr Frank  and the Science Fiction Lips.

I thought long and hard about what to wear Dr Frank with for his maiden voyage.  And I thought he’d be most at home amid a sea of kisses, leather look trousers and sky high heels.

I am wearing:

– Dr Frank brooch from Erstwilder

  • Kisses blouse from Target
  • Leather look jeans from TK Maxx
  • Red rose heels (thrifted)

I bought these jeans a few weeks ago to use as part of a cosplay costume. I’ve fallen head over heels for them.  I never expected that I’d want to wear a pair of leather-look trousers, but these are just so freakin’ comfortable.  They fit like a second skin and they stretch and move with you.  They’re also incredibly warm so I expect they’ll become a part of my winter wardrobe.  They’ll be perfect for pairing with teeshirts or vintage blouses for a tough edge.  I  love them.

Did you snap up any of the Erstwilder Rocky Horror collection? Which pieces were your favourite?

What I wore 10/1/2017

Summer is here in earnest and the temperature has been scorching.  Between the humid days and the sultry nights all I want to do is laze about in floating layers, read while stretched on on green lawns and wait for a breeze to lift the hair off my neck.

I am wearing:

    • Sportsgirl maxi dress (thrifted)
    • Tan sandals from Rubi Shoes
    • Snake bangle from Tilka
    • Drop pearl earrings from Louvisa
    • Floral hair garland (handmade by me)
    • Resin ring (thrfited)

My mermaid pedicure.

I went with super light makeup, because I knew that a full face wouldn’t last in the heat.  Just a swipe of BB cream, a touch of concealer where needed, cream blush and eyeshadow and nude lipgloss for a dewy look.

I’ve had snakes on the brain lately.  The night before last, I took a walk to my parents house and nearly stepped on a red-belly black snake as I crossed the road.  It took a moment to realise that the snake was dead, and by that time I’d already had a mini heart attack.  Snakes are a big problem here in summer time, although now that I live right in the heart of town, I rarely see any.  They tend not to venture where there are too many cars or people, but this slithery dude must have been on the move, probably looking for water.  I’m so pleased that I didn’t run into a live one, because they really frighten me.  The closest I want to come to a snake is these two brass ones wrapped around my wrist.

What I wore: A day off work

Normally I couldn’t care less about the AFL Grand Final.  I’m not a footy person at all and I just don’t get why it’s so exciting.  But this year I was chuffed about it because it meant a day off work.  Yep, for the past two years the Friday before Grand Final Day has been a public holiday in Victoria.  For……some reason.  But I’m not complaining!  It meant that the office was closed and I had an extra day to chill away from my desk.

I spent my day off shopping for groceries, reading, colouring, doing a bit of decluttering (I’m embracing minimalism) and playing with the kitties.

In keeping with my recent post about American Horror Story: Coven, I was feeling inspired to dress in the style of the students at Miss Robichaux’s Academy.  I wanted something a little grungy, a little goth and very comfortable.

I am wearing:

  • Black felt hat from Coo Ca Choo
  • Grey cardi (gifted)
  • Red and black lace slip dress (gifted)
  • Deathly Hallows Leggings from Jay Jays
  • Dr Martens boots
  • Art Deco earrings from Louvisa
  • Indian ring (gifted)
  • Beetle ring from Mansfield Emporium

It has been so wet here in Benalla.  We’ve had the wettest winter in decades.  And it was absolutely pelting on my day off, so my thoughts of skipping about in sandals were dashed the second I looked out the window.  Much as I adore them, I’m a bit tired of boots and very much look forward to breaking out some lighter footwear.

I had shaved my head again for Kink Fest last weekend and I was eager to show it off.  Braids are a great way to frame and highlight my shaved side, so I swept my hair back into a couple of french braids.  This had the extra bonus of keeping my hair from snarling in the vicious wind when I walked to the grocery store.

All in all it was a very chilled out day.  I have been feeling pretty burned out from work lately and I just relished the chance to stay home and re-energise myself.  I’ve found myself thinking wistfully of my school days, when ten weeks of term were bookended by two weeks holiday, three times a year with a glorious six week break over the summer.  Why don’t we do that with full-time work once we’re grown up.  I mean, how much stress are primary school kids under that they need a two-week break every few months.  I believe we should all get a generous break on a regular basis, rather than having to get excited about the odd public holiday.  Whaddaya reckon?

Things I Love Thursday 26/5/2011

Brrr!  I am freezing here in Melbourne this week.  The sky is grey, it’s spitting rain and it’s very cold.  Never mind, though!  I’ve put together a list of grin-inducing tidbits that are making me grin this week.

This is what I’m wearing today:

I am wearing:

– Yellow batik scarf (handmade by me)

-Quartz crystal earrings (made by my aunt)

– Black bell-sleeve top from Kmart

– Wooden bird brooch from Wayward Designs

– Earth-toned maxi dress from Remember Me (worn as a skirt)

– Grey suede Tony Bianco booties (thrifted)

– Amethyst ring

– Red leopard print ring from Diva

– Silver squiggle ring

– Turquoise ring

– Snake ring from Diva

– Jade ring

I really love this dress, but it’s far too cold to wear it in winter.  I chose it because I adore the colours in the skirt and also because the fabric is light and soft and it has lots of movement.  I really wanted to wear it today, so I just rolled down the bodice of the dress and tucked it in.  Instant maxi-skirt!

This Thursday, I love:

– Getting wonderful feedback from readers who’ve been inspired by Nessbow’s Guide To Developing Your Personal Style.  It’s selling like hot-cakes, and I haven’t heard a bad word yet.  It’s wonderful to know that so many people are feeling inspired to run out and start re-vamping their look.  When I wrote The Guide, I hoped that it would boost people’s confidence and give them the push they needed to start dressing the way they want to, and it seems that’s exactly what’s happening.  I couldn’t be more pleased.

– Lying in bed with my cat, the electric blanket and a Marilyn Monroe film.

– Piling rings onto my fingers.

– This article which talks about how Captain Jack Sparrow is a fashion icon.  I couldn’t agree more.

– Bento boxes with gyoza and sukiyaki beef.  Mmmm.

– Random slices of chocolate cake from friends.

– Planning imaginary joint birthday parties with Johnny Depp and Michael J Fox.

– Singing loudly to the Team America soundtrack.

– This article about how much Carrie Bradshaw’s life would actually cost.  I was rolling on the floor laughing.

– Reading on the bus.

– The way that my dad tries to catch objects that appear to be floating by when we go to see a 3D movie.

– Lovely pizza men who smile at you even when you answer the door in trackies and ugg boots.

– BB cream.  This is my new favorite beauty product.  There will be a full review on this in a few weeks, I promise.

– Ross, always.

What about you gorgeous?  What’s putting a smile on your dial this week?
