Things I love Thursday 9/2/2017

Welcome to another Things I Love Thursday.  In my opinion, Thursday is the perfect day to take stock of the things I’m grateful for and that bring me joy.  By the time Thursday rolls around, I’m beginning to lose momentum from the long week behind me and I’m usually truly ready for the weekend.  Taking the time to think about the good things from the past week really gives me a chance to look at things with fresh eyes.

This week I love:

  • My awesome boyfriend who rescued me from an enormous spider that was crawling across the bedhead at 4am last weekend.  We both hate spiders, so very very much.  And the fact that he was willing to stay in the room with the spider to make sure I was out safely and calmly meant the world to me.
  • Rain storms to break the oppressive summer heat.
  • Making veggie pies for dinner that taste amazing and look way fancier than they actually are.
  • Iced coffee
  • Starting work on my first knitted jumper.  It’s going to be super chunky and TARDIS blue.
  • Singing along to Blink 182 in the car and reminiscing about my teen years.
  • Saving Mr Banks
  • The new fennec fox kit who was born at Taronga Zoo last month.  This little dude is crazy cute and so energetic!
  • Finding a book I’ve been dying to read and a big ball of Noro silk yarn at a trash and treasure market.  I spent the princely sum of $3.
  • Watching a bunch of Lucy Worsley’s documentaries on Youtube.  In particular I’ve been enjoying History’s Biggest Fibs and also Fit to Rule.  Lucy is so lovely and makes history sound so cheeky and magical.
  • Dexter.  I’m finally getting around to watching this after so many years and I’m really enjoying it.

5 Fandom Friday: Fictional pets I’d love to adopt.

There can be no doubt that I’m an animal lover at heart.  I adore my pets and every animal under my roof is utterly spoiled with love and affection.  While I’m perfectly happy with Miss Jellylorum and Mr Ringo for the time being, there are several fictional pets that I’d be happy to add to my personal menagerie….

1. Binky from The Discworld series by Terry Pratchett.

Now, I’m not normally a horse person, but I’d make an exception for Binky.  Binky is a pure white horse owned by Death.  He has a sweet nature and loves galloping around the black fields surrounding Death’s castle.  Oh, and he can transport his rider to other dimensions and worlds, so he is basically a spaceship. I’d be happy to let this awesome horse take up residence in my backyard.

2. Salem from Sabrina the Teenage Witch.

I’ve often thought it would be awesome if my cats could talk, simple because I’d love to find out what’s going on inside their heads sometimes.  So a talking cat rates high on my list of imaginary dream pets.  And a wise-cracking sarcasm machine like Salem would be a great companion.

3. Thing from The Addams Family

There are a couple of reasons why I’d like to have Thing in my household.  Firstly, he’d be darn useful, helping with chores and bringing in the mail. Secondly, you could play some seriously awesome practical jokes with a living, disembodied hand.  Finally, I’d love a pet that can give me a lovely foot rub at the end of a long day at work.

4. Marcel from Friends

Ever since I was a little kid, I’ve wanted a pet monkey.  They are just so adorable and I imagine that we’d have loads of fun together.  Marcel was a bit of a handful, and wasn’t particularly well toilet trained, but he was super sweet and had awesome juggling skills.

5. Seymour from Futurama

Even though Seymour only appeared in one episode of Futurama, he made a deep impression on me.  Jurassic Bark is one of the saddest pieces of televisual entertainment I’ve ever seen and I cry every time I watch the final scene where Seymour waits endlessly for his master to return.  I would like to adopt Seymour so that he wouldn’t have to have such a sad ending to his life.  Although Fry didn’t intentionally abandon Seymour, my heart goes out to pets that have been left behind by their owners, and I like the idea of being able to give one a second chance at happiness.

If you could adopt a fictional pet, which one would you take home with you?

Things I Love Thursday 17/4/2014

Awwww yeah!  It’s Thursday again, and I’ve got a huge list of fantastic happenings that have been making me feel wonderful this week to share with you.

This week, I love:

– Season 4 of Breaking Bad.  As season 3 was wrapping up, I began to wonder where on earth the story was going.  I worried that they had begun to paint themselves into a corner.  But nope, season 4 took it in a direction I wasn’t expecting which is fantastic.

-Snapping a picture of this cute little moth.  I love the beautiful orange shade on its’ wings.

– Gardening.  I’ve been busily preparing my vegetable garden and I’m now ready to plant my seeds.  Normally I hate yard work, but working in my little garden has actually been really relaxing.  It’s so nice to get my hands dirty and spend some time out in nature.

– Grilled squash and cucumber salad.  Delish.

-Cuddly cats.  Now that the weather has started to get colder, my cats have become mega-cuddly.  At night time both cats pile onto the bed and compete to see who can snuggle the closest.  Miss Jelly in particular loves the chilly Autumn mornings, as they provide a wonderful opportunity for her to wriggle under the covers for one last snuggle before we get up for the day.

– Sunshine on my skin.

– Cutting my nails.  I like having long nails, but sometimes it’s such a relief to chop off my talons and enjoy the feeling of short nails.  In particular, I love to type when I’ve just cut my nails, because it feels like my fingers are flying across the keys.

-Finally finishing this crocheted Mario blanket for my brother.  I began working on this in August last year, and it’s been such a long and tedious process to get it finished.  It was supposed to be my brother’s Christmas present, but I didn’t finish it in time.  He’s a massive gaming nerd and he has a particular affinity for classic Nintendo games, so I was sure that this pixellated Mario would be just the thing to spread over his bed.  I’m so happy with how it turned out.

– Planning my birthday party.  I’ve decided that I want to have a trivia night for my birthday this year.  I love trivia and quizzes, and I think this would be a great way to celebrate my 28th birthday.  As my birthday falls in Winter, it’s always hard to think of something fun to do when it’s so cold out.  I figure this will be a nice, laid-back evening of fun and games.  I’m really looking forward to it.

-This amazing video tribute to one of my favourite Disney characters, who has just undergone an outrageous makeover.

Things I Love Thursday 6/3/2014

Welcome to another Things I Love Thursday.  This week a whole bunch of wonderful things have been putting a smile onto my dial.

This week I love:

– Manatees.  They’re such majestic creatures.

– Snapping these pictures of some cheeky cockatoos in my backyard on the weekend.  They love crunching the seed pods on this tree, and I’ll often walk outside to find a whole flock of them munching away and cackling to one another.

– Waking up to find that Ringo is using my fingers as a pillow, and the vibration of his purrs is rippling up my wrist.  So gorgeous.

-Finishing this crocheted baby blanket for one of my friends.   Her baby is due in July, so I’m hoping this will help to keep the little critter warm when the temperature drops.

– Chicken enchiladas.

– Yellow nail polish.  I was a bit unsure of it when I first painted my nails yellow, but it’s grown on me.

-Finding a bunch of Disney DVDs on sale and beefing up my collection considerably.  Most of these titles were only $9, so I figured that it was the perfect time to snap them up.  Needless to say, I’ve been watching  a lot of Disney lately.

– Doing yoga foot stretches after a long day on my feet at work.

-Finally finishing this drop-stitch scarf I started ages ago.  I really loved the way it turned out.  It will be up in my etsy store very soon.

– Planning to catch up with gorgeous friends.

– Going out for lunch with my mum.

Everyday Feminism.  It’s my new favourite website.

– Beginning Lent.  I’ve decided to give up shopping for non-essential purchases.  This is going to be rough.

– Having incredibly weird dreams.  There was one night this week when I dreamed that I was in my Nana and Pa’s house and there was a door I’d never seen before.  I opened it and it let to an intricate series of rooms, each of which was filled with clothes, books, toys and trinkets from when myself and my cousins were children.  There was even a room that had a huge feather bed, and on that bed was the green eider down that my grandfather would always wrap me in when I was sick.  I could still smell the scent of that blanket: a mixture of my grandfather’s shaving foam, Pears soap and cigarette smoke when I woke up.

-Thunderstorms.

Things I love Thursday 12/9/2013

Hello there!  Welcome to the very first Things I Love Thursday post from my new flat.  At the moment I’m writing this at my brand-new kitchen table, with sunshine streaming in through the windows.  It’s a glorious day, just perfect for writing about all the things I love.

This week, I love:

–          Having a flat all of my own.  There’s something quite liberating about living by yourself.  While it’s not all sunshine and lollipops, it’s pretty darn good.

–          Jelly’s lizard friend.  In the summer, there was a little lizard that would come and cling to my study window every evening.  Jelly absolutely loved it, and would sit in there watching it for hours.  I hadn’t seen the lizard for months.  On our final night in the old house, I went into the study to pack a few final things and there he was!  I went and grabbed Jelly and she spent the evening sitting happily on the stripped bed, chattering to the lizard and purring.

DSCF8790

–          Sparkling wine in crystal goblets.

–          The Mighty Ducks movies

–          Being able to step outside minus my jacket without freezing to death.  Spring is definitely here!

–          Finding perfect furniture on the cheap.

–          Waking up really early without an alarm.

–          Crazy-detailed dreams.  Every night since I’ve been in my new house I’ve had really vivid dreams.  They’ve mostly been strange and nonsensical, about random things like throwing a surprise birthday party for my boss, or going skinny dipping with Johnny Depp.  It’s nice to be sleeping deeply enough to have such crazy dreams.

–          Ringo-cuddles.  It’s taken him quite a while to get settled in the new house, so it’s nice to have a little cuddle with him just to reassure him that everything’s going to be O.K.

–          Visits from my mum and her dog, Brodie.  Brodie’s a sweet little guy and he and Jelly are becoming fast friends.  Now that I live close to my parents, Mum has been walking Brodie around to see me a couple of times a week.

–          Being really thrifty and spending less on my groceries.

–          Caramel lattes

–          Borrowing books about vintage fashion from the library.

Your questions answered…

You might remember that a few weeks ago I asked you to send me any questions you had about me that you wanted me to answer.  Well, I’ve recorded the answers to your questions in a vlog.

In this vlog I talk about:

– Optimism versus pessimism

– Dream jobs

– Moving to the country

– Negative comments on my outfits

– International travel

– What kind of animal I’d like to be as opposed to the kind of animal that I’m actually like.

I hope you enjoy it.

Also, if you have any more questions that you’d like me to answer feel free to get in touch.  I might do another of these videos in the future if I get enough questions, so get asking!

Things I Love Thursday 23/5/2013

A-hoy-hoy!  I hope you’re having a great week so far.  My week got off to a slow start, but it’s been picking up speed as we get closer to the weekend.  Shall we get started on this week’s Things I Love Thursday?  I think so….

This week, I love:

– Listening to music.  I love the way that music can effect my mood.  When I’m in a slump, most of the time a jive beat will get me up and moving.  I think it’s great that something so simple can have such a profound influence on my life.

DSCF8224-Snap dragons.  I took my mum out for Mother’s Day to the cafe at out local nursery.  There were so many beautiful floral displays, but these colourful snap dragons were my favourite.

DSCF8220While we were there, we also saw these silky chickens.  They look so funny, fluffing around the yard.

– Getting past the horrific “cravings and headaches galore” stage of cutting back on sugar.  I think the sailing should be quite smooth from hereon in.

– Thermal underwear.  ‘Tis the season!

DSCF8225-Getting a Ninja Turtle toy in my Happy Meal.  I was majorly obsessed with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as a kid, and Michaelangelo was always my favourite.  Now that I’m older, I appreciate Donatello a lot more.  He has a more subtle kind of humour, which I like.

– Piling on the rings

– Serving smiling old ladies at work.

– Having Jelly home safe and sound.  We had an incident on the weekend where she was outside with me and thought it would be a good idea to explore our neighbours’ yard.  She jumped the fence, and immediately angered the neighbour’s dog.  She shot over the fence with lightening speed, raced across the yard and tried to clamber over the fence on the opposite side.  Apparently our yard wasn’t far enough away from the dog.  She’s fine, and hopefully has learned her lesson about venturing outside her own backyard.

DSCF8229-This cutie that I bought last week from The Face Shop.  She’s actually a pretty pink cream blush.

Ta-da!  Adorable!  What a great find.

– Adding the blogs of all the ladies I met at the Truly Vintage event last week.  Some of them are corkers!  In particular, I’m smitten with Miss Fairchild’s Charm School.  So witty.
