What I wore: Sick Sad World

I count down to the beginning of October every year.  I like to celebrate Halloween for a full month, and as soon as the calendar flips over to October first, I’m in full-on spooky mode. I get out all my favourite horror movies, flip over to my goth playlist and start working some creepy elements into my wardrobe.

I couldn’t resist wearing this Sick Sad World tee shirt to ring in October.  I love the green spiral detail and the creepy eye peering out from the centre. The fact that it’s an homage to one of my all-time favourite cartoons, Daria, is just icing on the cake.

I am wearing:

  • Sick Sad World tee shirt from Pulp Kitchen
  • Green skater skirt from Princess Highway
  • Diana Ferrari ballet flats (thrifted)
  • Black tights from Target
  • Vintage striped scarf
  • Opal earrings from my grandmother
  • Green beaded necklace from Chapel Street Bazaar
  • Vintage cocktail ring from Faye Bella

I wore this outfit to go grocery shopping, work on some writing and have a coffee date with my boyfriend’s mum.

Do you do Halloween-themed outfits? What do you like to wear when the spooky season rolls around?

Daily outfit 10/7/2013

Did I mention that I got a buttload of tee-shirts for my birthday?  Well, I did, and today’s outfit features one of my favourite ones.

I am wearing:

– Empire Records “Shoplifter” shirt from The Rainbow Alternative

-Black and white striped long-sleeved shirt from Cotton On

– Red tartan skirt from Target

– 50/50 rights from Ambra

– Black motorcycle boots from Big W

– Plectrum earring (custom made for me by Ross)

– Guitar earring

– Silver signet ring

– Silver squiggle ring from Kleins

– Silver band ring (thrifted)

– Skulls and studs bracelet from ASOS

– Silver bangles from my aunt’s jewellery box.

DSCF8566I’m channelling Claudia Kishi with my earrings today.  One is a guitar and the other is a plectrum.

These boots are really coming in handy.  It’s been flippin’ freezing here, and they’re great for throwing on over a pair of thick socks.  They go with everything and they keep my feet warm and toasty.  Perfect.

These tee shirts are so much fun.  In case you didn’t realise, Empire Records is one of my favourite movies.  I’ve always secretly wanted to spot someone stealing from a store and scream out “Shoplifter!” the way that Mark does (although you’re not supposed to do that.  Mark really breaks all the rules about how you’re actually meant to handle a shoplifter).

DSCF8567I opted for big, punk-rock hair and darker makeup today.  This look makes me feel a bit rough and tumble, which I like.

Daily outfit 24/6/2013

I’m having a bit of a 90’s revival at the moment.  When it’s cold, I want to wrap up in loads of flowing layers and just laze about this house.  This outfit made me feel a tiny bit like Alanis Morissette.

DSCF8330Fun fact: Did you know that Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill was the first C.D I ever bought.  Seriously.  I loved her.  Still do!

DSCF8331I am wearing:

– Black bodysuit from Supre

– Black velvet skirt (thrifted)

– Black Dr Martens boots

– Grey wool hoodie (gift from my parents)

– Starry night pendant (thrifted)

-Assorted rings

DSCF8337This outfit was worn to do some blogging, finish the ironing and laze about on the couch with a book.  It was a great afternoon.

DSCF8333I was also having a very good hair day when I wore this outfit.  Normally in the winter my hair frizzes uncontrollably.  On this day, I got a little frizz, but I could pass it off as crazy-wild-thing hair rather than finger-in-a-socket hair.  I think so anyway.

Empire Records style

I absolutely love Empire Records.  I can watch it over and over and never tire of it.  I love the humour, I love the soundtrack and I adore the costumes.  As we seem to be experiencing a bit of a 90’s revival, I thought that this was the perfect time to take a look at the style of Empire Records.  I’ve put together an outfit for each of my favourite characters.  So dust off your distressed denim and give your Doc Martens a polish, because here we go…

To get this look, layer a black turtleneck over a pair of form-fitting jeans.  I’ve replaced Lucas’s sneakers with a pair of motorcyle boots: much better for racing off to Atlantic City (although not so great for chasing shoplifters).  To finish the look, slip on an accessory with  a touch of leopard print (to mirror the upholstery of the counch that Lucas is banished to).

A.J has always been my favourite character.  He’s smart, he’s witty and he’s pants-meltingly gorgeous.  A.J’s look is very distressed and undone.  The jeans are torn, the cardigan is baggy and the signet ring has a few chips and scuffs.  Select a 70’s inspired print shirt to slip under your too-big cardi and finish off the look with a pair of clunky boots.

To get Corey’s “Too cool for school” look, grab a tartan kilt and add a soft-as-kittens sweater in a pale shade.  Create a hard edge by popping on a pair of Dr Martens.  I’ve added a few quirky touches to this outfit.  The T-Rex earrings (to reference Corey’s misguided crush on Rex Manning) and a lunchbox in lieu of a handbag.  Y’know, for bringing Rex his lunch.

Gina’s outfit is super-sexy.  I’ve swapped out her leopard mini-skirt for something a little more rauncy and racy, with a touch of leather.  Gina wears a fairly demure cardigan, although she destroys it’s innocence by unbuttoning it over a red bra.  In true 90’s style, she rocks a pair of towering clogs with cork platforms.  Gina’s outfit wouldn’t be complete without a pack of M&Ms.  After all, drawing M&Ms is the only fair way to decide who gets to control the stereo.

It’s tricky to make Mark’s baggy skater outfit look feminine.  I’ve made it a bit more lady-friendly by choosing a more form-fitting shirt that is cut to emphasise the curve of a woman’s hips.  I’ve swapped his baggy cargo pants for a pair of cute harem pants.  This outfit still has Mark’s playful vibe, but it’s a bit more modern and flattering. Don’t forget to accessorize this outfit with some chunky silver chains.

Debra’s look is sexy in a whole other way.  It’s comprised of items that are ripped and frayed to show off her tattoos and pale skin.  It’s made up almost entirely of neutral colours, save for the cheeky peek of bright orange bra.  If you’re rocking this look, pick a pair of shoes that are slightly distressed, with sky-high heels and some chunky studs.

Damn the man, save the Empire!

Are you a fan of Empire Records?  Who’s your favourite character?  Which one would you be most likely to take style direction from?

Things I Love Thursday: 7/6/2012

Thank God it’s Thursday!  This past week has been truly higgledy-piggledy, full of false starts and craziness.  I always look forward to Thursdays because it gives me a chance to take a deep breath and think about all the things that I feel grateful for.

This week, I love:

-Running.  I went for a jog on the weekend and I managed to do nearly an entire circuit without stopping to walk.  I felt so proud of myself, and I could barely wipe the grin off my face as I bolted about the running track.

– My Cosby sweater from Mondays’ outfit post

– This Sally doll Ross bought for me this week.  It used to be a Micky Mouse doll, but it’s been repainted as Sally from The Nightmare Before Christmas.  She’s sitting in front of my computer at the moment.

– Apple-print tights.  These were a gift from Ross’s mum.  She also bought me a pair with little stilettos printed on them.  I’ll make sure I take a picture when I wear those ones!

– Knitting.  I bought a bunch of knitting yarn on the weekend, and I’ve managed to rattle off a couple of little projects.

– Paying somebody else to mow our lawn.  This house has the biggest lawn I’ve ever had, and I despise gardening.  Ross and I have been holding a stand-off for about a month to see who will cave and do the mowing.  It got to the point where our front yard had grown into a jungle that neither one of us could tackle.  So we caved and paid someone to do it for us, and the yard looks lovely once more.

-Birthday anticipation!  My 26th birthday is this Saturday, and I am really looking forward to it.  I’m having a Harry Potter-themed party.

– The way that Ross will cover my feet with his to warm them up when I get back into bed after grabbing a midnight drink.

Oh, I also have an outfit to share with you today.

I am wearing:

– Black beret from Target

– Black bodysuit from Supre

– Black and white striped blazer from CKM

– Red and Black skirt from 7 Angels

– Black snakeskin stilettos from Nine West

– Amethyst ring

– Ace of Spades necklace from Diva

– Glasses from Clearly Contacts

I found this skirt in a box of stuff my parents had been storing at their house.  I bought it when I was fourteen, and I used to wear it all the time.  It’s actually a bright red skirt with a black mesh overlay, so it look darker and the colour shimmers with the light.  This style used to be all the rage when I was in high school.  It’s not cool anymore, but I have such fond memories of this skirt that I wanted to restyle it and wear it once more.

What do you love this week?
