It’s Friday, Friday, gotta get down on Friday! (Look, I’m sorry for that Rebecca Black reference, but that song has been stuck in my head for ages). What are you gonna do this weekend? If you’re planning on sitting on the couch, eating Doritos and watching 30 Rock (which is, incidentally, exactly what you’ve done for the past two weekends), then it’s time for a shake-up. You need to try something new to break yourself out of this weekend rut you’re in. Never fear, because I’ve found 5 new things that you can try this weekend.
Try…A new genre of movie.
This one is pretty easy to work into a cruisy weekend routine. If you’re a bit of a movie nut, try shaking up your weekend by sampling a genre of film that you don’t usually watch. If you’ve never watched a film with subtitles, rent one and give it a go. If you don’t usually like horror movies, or westerns or classic films, grab one and shove it in your DVD player. The worst case scenario? You’ll hate it and you’ll be sad that you wasted an hour or two. The best case scenario? You’ll love it and you’ll feel inspired to explore this new genre.
Try…A new colour.
This is especially for you if you tend to wear mostly shades of black, grey and brown. Or if your hair has been exactly the same for the past six years. Or if your makeup kit contains nothing but brown and nude products. Pick a colour you love and work it into your look. There are so many different ways to do this. You could dye your hair, try a new nail polish, swipe it over your lips or lids. You could splash out and invest in a new coat or shoes in your chosen shade. Give another colour a go! There are literally hundreds of shades to choose from. Emerald green! Royal purple! Screaming pink! They’re all yours!
Try…a bit of culture
It’s always fun to soak in a bit of culture. This is doubly true if your weekend routine has consisted of “pizza, beer and telly” for the past month. Check out an art gallery or museum. See if there are any amateur theatre performances going on. Visit a burlesque club. Get out there and find something arty to occupy your time for a few hours.
Try…a new craft
There’s something immensely satisfying about making things with your hands. If you never have before, it might be time to give crafting a go. If you’re already an avid crafter, try branching out and trying a craft you haven’t sampled. My suggestions include crochet, knitting, needle felting, sewing, scrapbooking, beadwork and origami. Pop down to your nearest craft store to get some supplies to get you started. There are loads of beginner tutorials on Youtube to help you to find your feet. Don’t stress too much if you don’t make a masterpiece on your first try, just aim to have fun.
Try…A new hangout.
Throw on a gorgeous outfit and take yourself out for the day. Visit a cafe or restaurant that you haven’t been to before. Order something you wouldn’t ordinarily order. If you’re feeling really adventurous, you could try making your very own dining passport, and then aim to tick off all the restaurants in your area.
So this weekend, there’s no excuse for doing the same ol’ couch potato routine. Let me know in the comments what you’re going to get up to this weekend.
