Supanova convention 2013

On Saturday Ross and I drove to Melbourne to visit the Supanova Convention.  This was my fourth Supanova, and I was so excited to go once again.  Supanova is probably my favourite of all the conventions that I visit regularly.  I find that it tends to be a lot better organized than a lot of other cons.

There were loads of fabulous guests appearing this year: Barbara Eden from I Dream of Jeannie, Eliza Dushku from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Alex Kingston from Dr Who, Natalia Tena from Harry Potter and Adam Baldwin from Firefly to name a few.  We didn’t actually get to see any of the special guests this year, because the lines were just crazy.  I decided pretty early on that I would just skip any of the panels and just enjoy the rest of the convention.

Ross did get to meet a couple of his comic book heroes though.  Terry and Rachel Dodson, who are responsible for the artwork for Spiderman, X-Men and Wonder Woman (among others) were high on Ross’s list of “People to meet at Supanova”.  He queued for two hours and got the chance to chat to them and shake their hands.  We also met Joe Jusko, an incredible fantasy artist.  In addition to that, we caught up with several of my favourite artists, including Tristan Jones and Chris McQuinlan.

There were so many people waiting to get inside.  I don’t think I’ve ever been to a Supanova that was this crowded before.  We arrived an hour before the doors opened and the line was still nuts at this stage.

I basically spent the day wandering about the stalls, talking to people and doing a little bit of shopping.  I reprised my Luna Lovegood costume from last year, but I made myself a new pair of Spectrespecs.

I also took loads of pictures of my favourite cosplayers for you guys.  Enjoy!

DSCF8055

Flame princess from Adventure Time.  She was super sweet and she’d made her entire costume (including her wig) by herself.   I was beyond impressed!

DSCF8047

Aladdin!

DSCF8046Maleficent.  I couldn’t get over this costume.  I spotted her horns bobbing above the crowd early in the day, and I screeched to Ross “I have to get a picture with her later!”  She looked incredible.

DSCF8045

Me with Marceline from Adventure Time and Skwizgaar Skwigelf from Metalocalypse.  Their guitars were awesome.  I’m doing my very best air-guitar here (and it’s still terrible!)

DSCF8043

Professor Chaos from South Park.  Hilarious.

DSCF8030

CATS!  I think this character is Rumpleteezer, but I’m not entirely sure.  (Someone correct me if I’m wrong!)

DSCF8031

Fry and Leela from Futurama.

DSCF8032

It’s Old Gregg!  ( And no, before anyone asks, I didn’t check to see if she had a mangina).

DSCF8033

Cats and hobbits and spandex, oh my!

DSCF8034

Jeannie from I Dream of Jeannie.

DSCF8035

Totally fantastic weeping angel from Dr Who.  Her wingspan was impressive.

DSCF8036

Gorgeous Dr Who lasses.  One is the TARDIS and the other is a Dalek. Awesome and so creative.

DSCF8037

John Snow from Game of Thrones.

DSCF8038Fembots!  I nearly exploded with excitement when I saw these ladies walking in perfect unison through the convention hall.  I watched Austin Powers when I got home to re-live the sexy robot lady magic.

DSCF8039

There are a lot of girls that cosplay as Lumpy Space Princess, but this one is my favourite.  You might remember I also got a picture with her at Armageddon last year.

DSCF8040Vanellope Von Schweetz from Wreck it Ralph.  I loved her little Ralph companion.

DSCF8041

It’s the Greendale Human Being!  Honestly, I don’t know how she managed to wear this for the whole day, because it was hotter than hell inside the convention.

And finally, a seriously scary Bellatrix LeStrange.

As usual, it was an awesome day and I left wanting more.  I can’t wait for Oz Comic Con in a couple of months.

Did you go to Supanova?  Which was your favorite costume?

  1. Hi there. I’m the one dressed as Maleficent =) Thank you so much for your kind words. I sent you a email to the address stated at the top of the page. Made my night finding your blog.

    • Thank you so much! Your costume was incredible, and I was so excited when I saw your horns bobbing above the convention crowds. I’ll answer your email very soon.

    • Thankyou. There were so many brilliant costumes, many that I didn’t get pictures of.
I knew that you’d like the CATS. They were excellent. At one point during the day, I saw one of them lounging and preening herself on a picnic table outside. It was hilarious.

    • Thankyou! I had a different pair last year, but I like these ones better. I had to take them off by the end of the day though because they were making my vision go all loopy.
