Product review: Smashbox Photo Set Finishing Powder

Recently, I decided to treat myself to a decadent new face powder.  The last few powders I’ve bought have been from chemists and supermarkets, so I decided that it was high time that I tried something a bit more up-scale.  I splurged and bought myself a pot of Smashbox’s Photo Set Finishing Powder.

I’ve been very impressed with Smashbox’s products in the past.  My hot-streak of happiness is still unbroken, because I love this powder to bits.

The packaging is very sturdy and durable.  The powder comes in a clear jar with a black lid.  It’s very minimal, sleek packaging.  Normally I prefer powder compacts, so that you can reapply them during the day.  I’m very pleased that I did.  What this powder lacks in portability it makes up for in performance.

The powder itself is quite different from any setting powder I’ve ever used.  To begin with, it is entirely translucent.  The powder doesn’t have any colour of it’s own.  This means that when you apply it to your face, it will absorb oil and control shine without adding any extra coverage.  This is ideal for days when you want to wear lightweight, summer makeup.  You can easily apply this over a tinted moisturiser to nix shine while retaining that barely-there look.  The colourless formulation also means that the product doesn’t build up to create that cakey look that other face powders can when applied over foundation.

The powder itself is very finely milled, so it blends flawlessly into your skin.  It is so easy to work with.  It goes on smoothly and creates a soft, silky finish.    I also love the fact that you don’t have to use very much of this product to get a brilliant effect.  A light dusting is all you need to control shine and complete your look.

The Photo Set Finishing Powder lasts for hours and hours.  I have quite oily skin (particularly in summer) and I usually find that a light dusting of this powder over my makeup in the morning is all I need to keep shine at bay.  Occasionally, I will reapply a tiny bit of powder to my t-zone if I’m heading out at night, but generally a single application is enough to last the whole day.  The powder wears well and doesn’t gather in fine lines.

Another thing that I adore about this powder is the fact that it looks incredible in photos.  It doesn’t create a white flash-back effect that so many powders can.  Fashion and beauty bloggers take note: This is the product you need in your makeup bag if you want to take flawless outfit shots.

Even in flash photography, this powder doesn’t flash-back!

It’s ideal for adding over your daily makeup to control shine without adding extra coverage.

At $39, it’s a little bit more than I would normally spend on face powder.  However, it was totally worth it.  I am completely head-over-heels for Smashbox and it would take a lot of sweet-talking to convince me to switch to another finishing powder.  I can’t recommend it highly enough.
