All my favourite characters are jerks.

I had an epiphany the other day.  I came to the realisation that most of my favourite characters from T.V programs are complete bastards.  I have this tendency to prefer the unlikable characters to the good guys.  That’s not to say that I prefer the ‘bad guys’ or the villains.  I will always root for the good guy to win.  But when it comes to choosing the character I like best, I tend to pick the ones that are anti-social, conniving or just plain weird.

Here’s a run-down of some of my favourite characters (who also happen to be jerks)

Bernard Black (Black Books)

As someone who has worked in retail for 10 years, I can honestly say that Bernard offers the worst customer service I’ve ever seen.  However, just once, I’d love to speak to some of my rude, haughty stupid-ass customers the way he speaks to his.  I’d be sacked if I did, but boy would it be satisfying.

Sheldon Cooper (The Big Bang Theory)

Sheldon’s ornery, condescending and hard to get along with.  But I think that the reason he behaves this way is that he lives in his own reality, and he has trouble understanding the real world.  I can totally relate to this.  I get so frustrated sometimes when people do things that I think are just insanely stupid.  I know that if I behaved like Sheldon, I’d have no friends, but it would be really nice to insist that other people see things from your perspective (albeit at the rejection of the needs and feelings of others)

Donna Noble (Dr Who)

O.K, so Donna’s not exactly a jerk.  But she’s not a perfect example of a model citizen either.  She’s loud, she’s brash and she often rushes into things without thinking.  And yet, in spite of that, she’s totally loveable and utterly brilliant.

Roy (The I.T Crowd)

Roy’s not a bad guy.  He’s just a guy that’s been beaten down by years of doing a job where he’s required to help people who are much dumber than he is (but who think they’re superior to him).  I can relate to his exasperation.

Daria (Daria)

Daria was pretty much the poster child for teen angst when I was growing up.  She was judgemental of her peers, anti-social, incredibly sarcastic and she stole her best friend’s boyfriend.  In spite of all those things, I can’t help but admire her refusal to pretend to be something she’s not, and her ability to remain somewhat content with herself even though she doesn’t measure up to all the things a teenage girl ‘should’ be.

Do you have any favourite characters that are unlikeable?

  1. Fantastic list. I saw the clip of Black Books at the top and had to stop, since season 1 of that show is basically my pick for most underrated season in television – just brilliantly fabulous. 🙂

    • It is such a fantastic show. I can’t get over how many people have never watched it. Whenever I’ve had a bad day at work, I always feel heaps better if I spend a little time with Bernard.

  2. I adore Roy! I constantly quote “People. What a bunch of bastards.” 🙂 And of course I love the other jerky characters you listed — you have good taste!! Would Donna happen to be your favorite companion too?

    Cheers,
    Nina

  3. Sheldon is my favorite on that show, too. I also like all the various incarnations of Sherlock Holmes, even though he is also a jerk when it comes right down to it. For me, I think it’s because jerky characters also tend to be witty characters, which I appreciate.

    • Agreed. All of these characters are really quick-witted, which I find appealing. I still haven’t watched any Sherlock Holmes, but I need to get onto that right away.
