There’s no excuse not to wear sunscreen.

If you’re in the Southern Hemisphere, then you’re probably keenly aware that summer is on it’s way.  As the weather warms up, I become even more vigilant about including sunscreen in my skincare routine.  I wear sunscreen religiously every day, and I find it quite shocking that not many other people do the same.  If sunscreen isn’t currently taking prime place in your beauty routine, then it should be.  Today, I’m going to bust some of the excuses people give for not wearing sunscreen, and show you how vital sun protection is.

“I don’t need to wear sunscreen, because my moisturizer/primer/foundation have a built-in SPF”

It’s great that you’re choosing products that have a built-in SPF.  However, most of these products don’t contain enough sun protection to truly shield your skin unless you’re applying massive quantities of them.  Even if you use products with a sunscreen in them, you still need to apply sunscreen as well to make sure that your skin is adequately protected.

“But my skin doesn’t burn easily, I don’t need to wear sunscreen”

The sun begins causing damage to your skin long before you start to burn.  The sun’s rays break down collagen, which helps your skin to retain it’s elasticity.  And that means just one thing: wrinkles.  Short periods of sun exposure can have long-term effects on your skin, including wrinkles, sun spots and freckles.  Even if you don’t burn quickly in the sun, your skin still needs protection.

“Sunscreen makes my skin feel oily and look white and greasy”

Some sunscreens do cause ‘ghosting’, a build up of white residue on the skin after application.  However, there are loads of great sunscreens on the market that are ‘non ghosting’.  If you have oily skin, you might find that sunscreen makes your skin even oiler, and can cause break-outs.  To avoid this, choose a light formulation.  Break outs and ghosting can also be caused by using a body sunscreen on your face.  You should use a special facial sunscreen on your face and a different sunscreen on your body.  My favourite facial sunscreens are Nivea Face Veil and Kit’s Facial Sunscreen.

“I’m not even going to be spending any time outside today”

Even if you don’t spend a lot of time outside, you can still sustain sun damage.  Sitting by a window, riding in the car and short trips outside still expose your skin to UV rays, and provide an opportunity for sun damage to occur.

“I don’t have time to apply sunscreen in the morning”

Applying sunscreen doesn’t take very long, and it’s too important to skip.  If you’re really time-poor, look for a sunscreen with a built-in moisturizer, and substitute it for your normal face and body lotion in the morning.  That way, you kill two birds with one stone and you’ll be ready to head out the door in no time.

The sun can cause a huge amount of damage to your skin.  Around 80% of skin ageing is caused by sun exposure.  Sun damage also dramatically increases your chance of getting skin cancer.  Applying sunscreen every day is a cheap and easy way to reduce the risk, protect your health and help to keep your skin looking fresh and gorgeous.
