A few years ago, I bought a gorgeous black turban from a vintage store. Although I adored it when I made the purchase, the turban sat, unworn and unloved for several months. The reason it took me so long to wear it out is because I had no idea how to style it. However, now that I’ve had a bit of time to think about it and play around, my head is brimming with turban-based outfit ideas.
Turbans are loads of fun to wear. They compliment so many different styles and can be worn in a myriad of ways. They’re perfect for taming bad hair days and make brilliantly warm winter hats. If you’re raring to give turbans a try, here are some suggestions about how to wear them.
The biggest problem I have with turbans is the dilemma about how to wear my hair underneath them. Elaborate hairstyles get squished, and pulling your hair up underneath the turban can create weird-looking lumps and bumps. I have found that for long hair, wearing your tresses down is best. You can add voluminous waves, wild curves or iron your hair poker-straight for extra drama. Keeping your hairstyle simple creates a sleek look, and allows your turban to take centre-stage. If your hair is short, you can slick it all back under the turban. I would advise leaving a few tufts of hair sticking out, because otherwise you run the risk of looking a little bald.
While it can be fun to wear your turban as it is, you can easily jazz it up with some vintage jewellery. Brooches are a great way to add some sparkle to a plain turban. You could pin a single brooch to the front of your turban, or go nuts with a cluster of shimmering pins.
Wear your turban with a flowing skirt and a heavily embroidered top for a fortune-teller-inspired look. Add plenty of necklaces and some big earrings to finish off the outfit.
Turbans are a great way to add a funky twist to a casual weekend outfit. Spice up your regular ‘jeans and tee’ combo with a slick turban. As an added bonus, it will also disguise greasy, tired weekend tresses!
If your style veers towards the glamorous, try wearing a turban with a slinky evening gown and sky-high heels. Make sure that your hair is sleek and smooth and top off your look with a pair of dramatic drop earrings.
For a minimalist look, pair a plain coloured turban with a bold, graphic dress. A long pendant necklace and a swipe of red lipstick are all you need to finish off this eye-catching outfit.
The ways you can wear a turban are truly endless. With a little creativity, you’re sure to find a way to work one in with your own personal style.
