I honestly believe that the messy bun is one of the most versatile and useful hairstyles going around. It perfectly compliments a bohemian or laidback outfit and is excellent for days when you want to look like you have spent ages on you hair, when you actually just took a couple of minutes. The messy bun is a quick fix for dirty hair, or when you are caught out in the wind or rain. You can do this style in about two minutes and it will work on most hair lengths and types.
All you need to get this look is a couple of bobby pins. If you want it to last for a while, a blast of hairspray will help, but I find that if I pin the bun well enough, it stays all day on its own.
To begin with, give your hair a quick brush. If you don’t have a brush handy, quickly run your fingers through it to get rid of any major tangles.
Use your fingers to scrape your hair back into a ponytail at the nape of your neck. Then, twist the hair a little and coil it around on itself on top of your head. It’s really up to you where you want to place the bun, but I find that placing it at the crown of your head tends to be the most secure and flattering place.
Take a few bobby pins and pin the bun to your head. I usually pin the ends first and then affix a few more pins around the top and sides of the bun. When you are pinning the hair, remember to pin some of the hair in the bun and some of the hair on your scalp, to give the bun some staying power. Don’t worry if you have some stray bits sticking out, these all add to the charm of the look. If you want, you can even use your fingers to pull at the bun a little to give it a slightly undone look.
If you want the bun to stay put for a while, give it a really light spritz of hairspray. Don’t overdo it though.
You can then leave the bun as it is, tie a headscarf over it or add some barrettes or combs.
