A good friend of mine, who has gorgeous skin, swears by Bio Oil. Bio Oil is a skin oil containing lavender, rosemary and calendula that claims to be able to reduce the appearance of scars and stretch marks, even out skin tone and help troubled skin. I decided to pick up a bottle and give it a whirl.
The first thing that I noticed about this product was how cheap it is. It costs around $13 for a bottle and is available at most pharmacies. I have been using it for two months now, and my bottle barely has a dent in it. You really only need to use a few drops at a time, so one bottle will last for ages.
I have some slight acne scarring around my nose and forehead that I was interested in getting rid of. I also have some fine lines around my eye area, which seem to be caused by dehydration and tiredness. I am always on the lookout for something that will improve my overall skin tone, as my skin is quite an uneven colour, with a bit of reddening around the nose and cheek area. I had also hoped that the Bio Oil would assist me with breakouts.
I found that the oil didn’t really do anything for my acne scars or my skin tone. I have been using it twice daily for two months now and I can’t see any improvement whatsoever. I also have used it on a large scratch scar on my arm, which I have had for ten years, and it hasn’t helped one little bit.
I also couldn’t recommend using Bio Oil on areas where you have breakouts. It really is quite greasy and I found that it made my pimples even worse. It also tends to clog the pores a little, so it would be best avoided if you are prone to blackheads.
One thing I will say about the product was that it did make a really good moisturizer. On areas where my skin was dry or flaky, it was massively hydrating and evened out the texture of my skin very well. I have quite sensitive skin and this product didn’t irritate my skin at all.
Bio Oil is quite greasy, but it did a good job of creating a dewy glow on days when I decided to go sans makeup. It is also brilliant for preparing your skin to use a mineral foundation, because it gives the powder a good base to adhere to and it lasts all day. If you are going to use it regularly, I would definitely recommend investing in a pore-clearing cleanser, as it does make your face greasier and more clogged than normal.
The oil also helped with the fine lines around my eyes. I think that the skin around my eyes is in desperate need of hydration, as I am yet to find an eye cream that I am not allergic to. This worked a dream, plumping out the lines without irritating the skin around the eyes.
Overall I found that Bio Oil did have its uses, but it did not live up to the claims on the bottle. I wouldn’t buy a bottle and expect it to perform a miracle, but if you have dry or sensitive skin that needs a big drink, this might be the way to go.
